Not sure what to do with the kids over the summer, looking for outdoor activities and still maintain social distancing? We recently discovered a hidden gem, Loxahatchee Wildlife reserve located 7 miles west of Boyton Beach Florida.

There are approximately 50 trails for walking, biking. Great for social distancing during this current pandemic. Paddleboarding and kayak rentals are also available. The entrance fee which is normally $10, was waived due to Covid-19.

We ventured out on our family hike 3rd week of May, as we had been quarantined, beginning March 19th. This was also the first time our daughter had seen her grandparents since the start of the quarantine. The trails are pretty flat, so yes, this is a great hike for grandparents as well.

Look closely, you will see an alligator

Here are a few hiking tips

  • Hike first thing in the morning. (Went at 10:30 am, not the best time to go with a 7-year-old)
  • Hydrate, bring a few canisters of water.
  • Bug spray (Its bug time in Florida)
  • Bring a camera.
  • Hike in the middle of the trails, we saw a few alligators in the canals and even saw a snake.
  • Park closer to the trail, where you will start your hike.

Summer is here in Florida, which also means outdoor activities will become a bit more challenging, but an early morning family hike is absolutely a great way to start a summer day. We are definitely looking forward to the cooler months in South Florida. We will plan on getting out more and experiencing the beauty of South Florida.
